Teach English!


As a volunteer, you can make a drastic impact on the lives of others.  If you are a fluent English speaker and have a strong interest in teaching English to children, adolescents and adults, then joining us at Horizon could be one of the most transformative experiences for you.

We look for individuals with a variety backgrounds, and we value any teachable skills that you can bring to share with us and our community.  No prior teaching experience is required.  We also have other positions available in addition to our volunteer openings (please see Other Positions Available page.)

 

What you can expect as a volunteer

  • To teach 2-3 classes in the morning and another 2-3 classes in the afternoon, totaling 25 hours per week.  (Depending on the season it could be more hours of work)
  • To receive program support and orientation during your time here
  • To be provided with affordable, safe, and comfortable housing (please see our Accommodations & Pricing page for more details)
  • Spare time in between classes and free weekends to travel

  • Visit some of northern Peru’s top attractions: Chan Chan, Huanchaco Beach, Catholic churches, etc.

  • Obtain teaching experience in a different setting. There is no prior experience necessary
  • Take advantage of arranged lessons through our organization to learn Spanish, dance, traditional spanish cooking, surfing, sand-boarding
  • Live in an area rich with history, quite close to the Incan ruins
  • Access to medical and dental clinics

The requirements for volunteering are

  • To be fluent in English. It is not required that you are a native speaker, however we do give preference to native English speakers.
  • To have a strong interest in teaching and working with children and young adults. You must have a genuine desire to serve and work with those less fortunate than yourself.  We ask that you try to the best of your abilities to contribute to the community of La Esperanza.
  • To be responsible, organized, and punctual. It is important that you are able to operate autonomosly in a classroom and serve as a representative of Horizon School.
  • To be flexible. The economic and living situations in Peru are not as ideal as those in North America and Europe.  Accordingly, you must adapt and thrive in less than ideal conditions.  The ability to do so and the experience of living in or visiting such a country is incredibly rewarding, and it will open your eyes to a world beyond your own.
  • Knowledge of Spanish is not necessary.  We will help you build a foundation for learning the language when you arrive.
  • Teaching experience is not necessary, although you must be enthusiastic and a good role model in a classroom environment.
