Our organization plays a unique role by providing English language classes to the local community completely free of cost, making both knowledge and mastery of the English language feasible for the members of our community. Our goal is to improve the lives of the members of our community by opening avenues which otherwise would not be available to them, including the option to establish a good foundation for learning the English learning at an early age, to augment students’ learning throughout high school and university to overcome challenges faced in Peru’s education system, and to be able to seek out job opportunities not previously available to them. Description & Responsibilities:
Horizon has an open position for Program Coordinator, and we currently are soliciting applications. The position will be based in Trujillo, Peru. The primary purpose of this role is to manage programs and our staff of volunteers. This opening is designed for a committed, hard-working, organized, and creative person looking to make a positive impact on the lives of others through education. The Program Coordinator will report to the Director of Horizon School Peru.
This is an unpaid position, however the hired individual will receive free accommodation and meals. We are looking for candidates that are able to commit to a 6-12 month time period, beginning in March. This is a full-time position.
Responsibilities include (Program Management):
• Execute teaching schedule and organize class curriculum to ensure class calendars and lesson plans are in place
• Plan, implement, and manage school programs. The Program Coordinator will liaise with the School Director
• Work in partnership with international/local NGO’s to manage fundraising for Horizon and for local families in La Esperanza. When necessary, help volunteers organize sponsorship from private companies or individual funds prior to their arrival at Horizon School Peru
• Build and manage relationships with community service programs
• Market Horizon’s services externally to prospective volunteers and to the community using social media as well as direct and e-mail marketing
• Teach English classes to students in a one-on-one setting or in a larger class environment if volunteers are unavailable
Key Responsibilities (Volunteer Management):
• Manage team of volunteers (team typically ranges from 6-10 volunteers at a time)
• Conduct weekly team meetings to review class progress and identify/address any potential issues
• Communicate with prospective volunteers, recruit, interview, and oversee arrival of new volunteers. Provide training and support during arrival
Qualifications:
(Mandatory)
1. Qualified and experienced as a teacher: preferably TEFL/TESOL qualified, with some teaching English experience
2. Demonstrated program and project management skills. Ability to multi-task
3. Demonstrated excellent communication skills – both written, verbal, and cross-cultural communication skills
4. Basic and/or intermediate Spanish
5. Excellent computer skills and experience in the following areas: Microsoft Office and other tools including WordPress, facebook and other social media programs, ability to maintain and update our website, ability to manage high-volume e-mail traffic
6. Must be able to make a time-commitment of 6-12 months (some room for negotiation)
7. Patience, flexibility, team-skills, and interest to work in a developing country and small non-profit organization
8. Must be 24 years of age, or older
(Desirable)
1. Demonstrated experience coordinating volunteers and/or assisting with the running of programs/projects.
2. Experience living and/or working/volunteering in a Latin American, or, another developing country.
3. Ability to begin in March.
4. Ability to recruit new students and facilitate student registration process, so that the poorest families get the most support.
5. Ability to support individual participants in fundraising initiatives.
