1. Do need to be able to speak Spanish? Can I learn Spanish while I’m there?
Fluency in

2. How long am I required to stay?

side effects 0f metformin welcome to stay as long as you want volunteering at the Horizon House. Naturally, the longer you stay, the greater the impact you will have. The minimum time period to volunteer is one month.
3. Where will I be living? What is the accommodation like?
You will be living at the Horizon House in La Esperanza. The Horizon House is comfortable, safe, and spacious, complete with utilities. We have multiple common areas including a living room with a computer, kitchen (including gas stove), backyard, a washing machine, several bedrooms, and several bathrooms equipped with hot water.
4. Why do I pay a contribution fee?
Horizon, compared to thousands of other non-profit organizations that recruit volunteers and charge large fees, undoubtedly offers one of the best deals to our volunteers. We ask for a minimal one time contribution fee according to length of stay.
This money goes towards maintaining the house, school supplies, and helping us implement our programs. One of our long term goals is to be able to invest this capital in the community as well.

5. What is the weather like in Trujillo?
Trujillo is sunny and dry all year round. The average temperatur is 21C (70F) and in summer (January – March) it can get as hot as 32C (90F). Nights are typically cooler, so bring warm clothes as well. Trujillo’s climate has earned the nick name “La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera”, or “The City of Eternal Spring” due to its year-round warm climate.
6. Where will I be working?
We have a classroom in the Horizon House and you will be working both there and at the local public school, which is a five minute walk away. We teach individual classes to students at the Horizon House, whereas classes at the public school are taught in a traditional class environment.
7. What is a typical workday like?
A typical work day will consist of teaching 2-3 classes at the public school either in the morning or the afternoon plus teaching an additional 2-3 classes at the Horizon House either in the morning or afternoon. Classes at the public school are taught in a traditional classroom environment and can range in size from 20-40 students. Classes at the Horizon House are taught individually with students. Classes are 1 hour long. An average work week consists of 25 hours.
8. How old are the students?
The students at the primary school are first through sixth grade (age 6-12). The students that we teach at the Horizon House range in age from 6-99.
9. How many volunteers are at Horizon?
At a given time there can be between six and ten volunteers. In addition to doing great work with our kids and having a traditional Peruvian family homestay environment, you will also be able to meet other volunteers from all over the world.
10. How safe is Trujillo?
Trujillo is a very safe city. Just like any city around the world, it is important that you take certain precautions while here. For example:
- Don’t carry around large sums of cash – just take what you need
- Don’t draw attention to yourself by wearing expensive jewelry
- Be aware of certain areas where you should practice extra caution or avoid altogether
- Never go out alone at night and always let someone know where you are going
It should be noted that there are thieves and at times people are robbed in and around Trujillo. We advising using purses with a long strap that you can wear over your body so someone cannot grab and run away with your belongings. It is also sensible to think about the clothing you wear. Huanchaco and Trujillo are tourist towns; however La Esperanza is not a tourist town and we advise you to dress modestly (trousers or long shorts).
11. Do I need a travel Visa and should I get travel insurance?
We recommend that you have travel insurance. This is always advisable when you travel and is of particular importance in developing countries. We hope that you will not need it, but we would not want to see any of our volunteers be in need of travel insurance. We have an agreement with a local Centro Medico for any volunteer who needs to see a doctor. We also have an agreement with a dental clinic if you need dental treatment.
12. How do I get to Trujillo?
For travelers coming to Horizon from outside Peru, you must first fly into Lima International airport. From there, you can travel to Trujillo either by bus or plane. Traveling by bus takes approximately 9 hours and costs about $25US. If you prefer to travel to Trujillo by plane, you can search for fares on www.lan.com.pe and www.starperu.com/. Please be sure to let us know your travel plans so that we can coordinate and also help you make arrangements!
When you arrive at the airport/bus station in Trujillo, a Horizon representative will be there to meet you. You are responsible for paying for the taxi back to the Horizon house. It is recommended that you exchange at least $100 US for your first day at Horizon.
